The catalyst that inspired us to get out of debt and on a better path financially was Dave Ramsey. Brittany’s dad bought us tickets to a live event where we were confronted with the poor financial path we were on. We came to a very important realization while there: we got ourselves into the situation we were in, so it was going to have to be our responsibility to get out.

Three years after beginning our debt free journey and we were now finally debt free. We did our debt free scream on the Dave Ramsey show and then started working on a six month emergency fund. It took us another six months to finish that, but we weren't really sure what steps to take next. We knew we eventually wanted to buy a house, but didn't quite have the savings for that yet.

Another few months into saving money on top of our emergency fund, and we decided to make a life changing move to Hawaii. We didn't live there long, but it opened our eyes to an entirely different way of thinking about income and living than we were used to. We now wanted to develop passive income streams that would allow us to travel and not have to work at a single location.

Unfortunately in the process of moving to and from Hawaii, we lost our jobs and also a lot of money. We were forced to move in with family to get back on our feet. After a year of living with Mike's mom, we were finally back to a place we could survive on our own. We moved into our first apartment and continued saving money.

Eventually we bought our first house, but encountered multiple situations while living there that forced our hand to move. This was in the middle of the housing market boom we're still currently in.

All of the profits from the sale of our house, plus a lot of our extra savings, we then invested into the stock market. We've been investing in the stock market for a little over a year now, but much more so in the last six months. So far our investments consist of ETFs such as VTI and VOO, and individual companies like Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN).

We're currently strategizing what our next moves will be.
