Believed to hail from the land of the rising Sun, once mostly owned by Buddhist Monks in the 1600s used to keep off rats from destroying rice paper scrolls in the temples and silkworm barns where rodents had infested and posed a threat to the lucrative silk industry. However, the true origin of the Japanese Bobtail cat is still a mystery. Recently scientists revealed genetically the Japanese Bobtail does not resemble cats from Japan. Conclusion either the western influence has tempered with their original genetic signal.

Others believe they originated from other Asian countries like Korea or China. In 1968, cat breeders Elizabeth Freret and Lynn Beck cat breeder imported Japanese Bobtail cats to America. Beck ended up forming the first cats club dedicated to the Japanese Bobtail cat.

Lynn and Elizabeth wrote the first breed standard for the Japanese Bobtail cat.

The Japanese Bobtail cat is one of a kind of feline family. It's a unique feature being its ``bobbed" tail pompoms like with kinks, twists, and curves distinctive to each Japanese Bobtail cat, oval lovable eyes mostly blue or gold in color, slender body, wide ears, and long hind legs making them great jumpers. Often referred to as the "singing cat" having a variety of meows and chirps to communicate.

Today they are also used as a symbol of good luck, " ManekiNeko" ceramic statues of the Japanese Bobtail cat often displayed in Asian shops and restaurants.

In Thailand, its home country the Korat is known as the SiSawat cat. Dating from the 14th century as per their depiction in ancient literature. The Korat name comes from the northeast region of Thailand. These silverblue cats we're given out as goodluck charm, a gift given in pairs and holding a special meaning when given as a gift to newlyweds as a symbol of fertility and prosperity.

7. BURMILLA


An accidental crossbreed between a Burmese and a Chinchilla Persian was created in England in 1981. The end product was this attractive feline with a short thick coat, the Burmilla. It was first recognized by Britain's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy and Europe’s Federation Internationale Feline. In 2011 the Burmilla again found its way to The Cat Fanciers Association Miscellaneous Class records.
